Question: Why is data privacy so important and how do you feel about it?
I think data privacy or data in general is probably one of the most talked about topics in technology today. We put so much data out into the world, whether it’s through a simple google search or making a payment online, or even using our standard everyday applications, regardless I don’t think we really process how much information we are truly sending out there. I know myself, I do a lot of online shopping and use the internet for everything in my life and find myself not even thinking twice about the information I put out there because I almost just have this “trustworthiness” that I can’t technically explain to you. Yet when I go into a store and they ask for my postal code at the end of the purchase, I automatically get freaked out because I know that’s probably going to be used for some analysis or data collection process.
It’s unusual to me as I think in face to face situations we are so easy to protect our data, and protect our information as we are always trying to limit the amount of information we give about ourselves with other individuals. However, on the internet it’s like we almost don’t even really think about it, we just put whatever we want out there and are pretty care free about it, but then we are so surprised when we get hacked.
However, I think now, slowly things are coming out and being exposed by other companies with all the other things that are happening in the world right now. People are really starting to understand that, we are putting a lot of information out there and at this point should know what exactly it’s being used for. I really believe the ability to be anonymous is a huge step in technology. I mean what we’re trying to do right now; with the establishing of trustworthiness online without having to put so much data out there, with the ability to literally conduct a transaction and talk to people securely is the exact kind of “trustworthiness” you experience when you are in a store talking face to face with a person. We are literally enabling this action online and giving users certainty that whatever you put out there A) belongs to you B) won’t go anywhere C) will not be reused for anything. And I think that its extremely exciting we are a part of that, and that we are trying to inflict that into technology today and most importantly communication. I’m really excited that we’re doing that, even for my own personal use because I know it means just as much to me.
